Spiced Slow Cooked Brisket
When starting solids, one of the most important nutrients for babies is iron and this slow-cooked brisket recipe is an easy, delicious way to support your baby’s growing needs while feeding the whole family too.
Around 6 months of age, a baby’s natural iron stores begin to decrease, which is why offering iron-rich foods during the introduction to solids is so important. Beef brisket is naturally high in highly absorbable haem iron, helping support brain development, growth and energy levels in babies and toddlers.
The best part? This tender brisket is soft, easy to shred for babies and packed with flavour for the entire family. (And so dang EASY to make!)
This recipe doesn’t skip on the spices, which is wonderful for encouraging adventurous eating and great for the immune system during cooler months.
Ingredients
1-2kg beef brisket
1 onion
4 cloves garlic
400g diced tomatoes
200g tomato paste
Juice of 2 fresh limes
1 cup beef or chicken bone broth
2 tbsp coconut aminos (optional)
2 tbsp clean BBQ sauce (we like the Good Brand sauce)
Spice Rub
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Smoked paprika
Cumin
Ground coriander
(measure spices with your heart!)
Method
Slice onion and cook in a fry pan with olive oil until translucent. Remove from pan.
Rub spices generously over brisket.
Heat ghee or olive oil in a hot pan and sear brisket on each side until browned.
Add brisket to the slow cooker with onion and remaining ingredients.
Cook on high for 6 hours until tender and easy to shred.
Shred and serve.
For babies starting solids, serve shredded brisket alongside soft vegetables, mashed potato or on sweet potato ‘nachos’ with guac for older toddlers and adults. This is one of those iron-rich family meals that works for everyone at the table with minimal effort and maximum nourishment.
