Bone Broth for Babies: Plus a recipe for sickness support
When starting solids, every bite is an opportunity to nourish your baby's growing body and developing immune system. One traditional food that packs a nutritional punch is bone broth.
Rich in collagen, gelatin, electroyltes and amino acids, bone broth has long been used to support gut health and overall wellness. While it's not a cure for illness, it can be a nourishing addition to your baby's diet during both healthy periods and times of sickness.
How Bone Broth Supports Gut Health
Around 70% of the immune system is housed within the gut, making gut health an important foundation for immunity. Bone broth contains naturally occurring amino acids, including glycine and glutamine, which help support the cells that line the digestive tract.
For babies starting solids, bone broth can be an easy way to introduce extra nutrients while supporting a healthy gut environment.
Bone Broth and Immune Support
Bone broth provides minerals and nutrients that support overall health, while helping keep little ones hydrated. During cold and flu season, nutrient-dense foods can play an important role in supporting recovery and maintaining appetite when children are feeling under the weather.
Why Bone Brothsicles Are Perfect During Sickness
When babies and toddlers are sick, they often eat less, drink less and may have sore throats or irritated mouths. That's where Bone Brothsicles might be your bestie!
Made with bone broth, mango and coconut cream, these frozen treats provide hydration, nourishment and a soothing cooling effect. They can be easier to accept than meals when appetite is low and help support fluid intake during illness.
Bone Brothsicles Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups frozen organic mango
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 cup liquid, cooled bone broth (we like Gevity or Best of the Bone natural flavour)
1 cup coconut cream / coconut yoghurt unsweetened
optional: superfoods like Foraged for you, sprinkle of turmeric & ginger, honey for children older than 1, Eden Health Wild C, Collagen powder, beef organ power
METHOD:
Blend all ingredients together and pour into moulds ( for babies you can pour it into a silicone teether mould and freeze - this is fab for teething too!). You can also serve it as a smoothie for babies OR convert this into BLW gummies by adding the liquid into a pot, sprinkling over 6 tbsp gelatine and allowing it to bloom. After 5 minutes, turn the heat on to low and stir until combined. Pour into a glass container and refrigerate overnight. Slice into finger shaped rectangles, ensure they pass the ‘squish’ test and offer to bub.
For older babies and toddlers a bit more confident with hand to mouth coordination, you can pour the Brothsicles into popsicle moulds and freeze for a few hours. Best eaten outside in the sunshine for an extra immune boost.
