Gut + Immune Gummies for Babies, Toddlers & The Family.
When cold and flu season arrives (or daycare bugs seem never ending!), many parents start looking for gentle, food-first ways to support their little one's immune system. (And……to support ours too!)
These truly easy peasy lemon squeezy homemade Gut + Immune Gummies are packed with nourishing ingredients that work together to support both gut health and immune function. Best of all, they're easy to make, naturally delicious, and can be customised into two flavours: a bright Orange, Lemon & Ginger Immune Gummies recipe or an antioxidant-rich Elderberry Gummies version.
Because around 70% of the immune system lives within the gut, supporting digestive health is one of the best foundations for building resilient little immune systems.
Gummies can be given to babies from 6 months old, provided they pass the ‘squish test’ and are poured into a glass container to set and cut into finger length, soft strips for baby to hold and squish. Older children can be given them in fun mould shapes.
BONUS: These nourishing gummies aren't just for little ones but they're also a wonderful wholefood snack during pregnancy and postpartum, providing protein-rich gelatine, natural vitamin C and antioxidant-rich ingredients to help support connective tissue, immune health and overall nourishment during these demanding stages.
Why Gut Health Matters for Immunity
Your baby's gut is home to trillions of beneficial bacteria that help train and regulate the immune system. A healthy gut microbiome supports healthy digestion, nutrient absorption and immune responses, making gut health an important part of overall wellness.
These gummies combine gut-loving ingredients with immune-supportive nutrients to nourish both systems at once and are beautifully supportive when they do catch a bug or two in gently nourishing their gut and immune system and even help promote restful sleep.
The Gut + Immune Benefits of Each Ingredient
Gelatine
Gelatine is the star ingredient that gives these gummies their wobble, but it also offers wonderful gut-supportive benefits.
Gelatine contains amino acids such as glycine (the one that helps them have a good snooze!) and proline, which help support the gut lining and healthy digestion. It may also assist with maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier while providing a gentle source of protein for growing children.
Elderberry
Elderberries are naturally rich in anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress. (Please only ever use cooked elderberries or store bought elderberry syrup - they are a tad poisonous when raw!)
They're traditionally used to support the body's natural immune defences and provide vitamin C along with a range of beneficial plant compounds.
Orange & Lemon
Fresh citrus fruits provide natural vitamin C, which contributes to normal immune function and also helps the body absorb iron (another key immune vitamin!) from food.
They're also rich in flavonoids and antioxidants that support overall health while adding a fresh, naturally sweet flavour little ones love.
Ginger
Fresh ginger has been used for centuries to support wellness.
It contains natural plant compounds called gingerols, which have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Ginger can also be soothing for little tummies and may help support healthy digestion.
Camu Camu & Acerola Cherry Vitamin C Powder
Adding a natural vitamin C powder made from camu camu and acerola cherry provides an extra boost of wholefood vitamin C. (I really love Eden Healths Wild C powder for this!)
Vitamin C plays an essential role in:
Supporting normal immune system function
Protecting cells from oxidative stress
Assisting with iron absorption
Because these powders come from wholefood fruit sources, they also contain naturally occurring phytonutrients alongside vitamin C.
Honey (For Children Over 12 Months Only)
For toddlers older than one year, raw honey adds natural sweetness while containing antioxidants, minerals, sleep supporting compounds and help soothe a sore throat and cough.
Honey should never be given to babies under 12 months of age due to the risk of infant botulism.
Two Delicious Ways to Make Them
(I typically make both batches at once since they take no time to whip up! And are great to rotate through them)
Orange, Lemon & Ginger Immune Gummies Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
Small Pot
Glass container or gummy moulds for older children (12 months+)
1 1/2 cups pure orange
½ lemon Juiced
1/2 cup coconut or plain water
1/2 tsp organic ginger powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1-2 Tbsps honey (ideally Manuka honey for additional immune supporting benefits)* for children over 1
4 Tbsp gelatine (high quality, grass fed gelatine is ideal)
optional add ins:
1 tsp Eden Health Wild C Powder
1 tsp chia seeds
½ tsp nordic naturals cod liver oil
Foraged for you children’s blend
METHOD:
Place all liquid (minus honey) into the small pot (not on heat) and sprinkle over the gelatine. Allow to ‘bloom’ until wrinkly (typically 5 minutes)
Turn mixture onto low heat and stir gently with a wooden spoon, once the gelatine begins to dissolve, mix in the ginger, turmeric and any additional add ins you like.
Once mixed together, turn off heat and add in honey
Pour into glass container or moulds and place into the fridge for 4+ hours until set.
For babies under 1, slice the gummies in the glass container into long, finger length shapes
Store in air tight container in the fridge for up to one week
